If an aquarium lacks sufficient oxygen-poor zones (anaerobic zones) or denitrification is incomplete, nitrate levels will rise. Too high a nitrate concentration can lead to unwanted algae growth, and this algae could irritate nearby corals. Nitrate itself also slows coral growth.
The nitrate concentration in a well-functioning reef aquarium should ideally be below 1 mg/L. In aquariums with only fish, nitrate concentrations are typically much higher. Most test kits use a process in which a certain portion of the nitrate is chemically converted to nitrite and then measured as such. As with nitrite measurements, interference from amines has a significant impact on the measured value. If such interference occurs, significantly lower concentrations than actual are measured.
Conclusion: Many nitrate test kits are susceptible to interference from amines. This can lead to significantly lower results than actually present. The Salifert Nitrate Test is free from such amine interference. The special ingredients enable very fast and precise measurements. The measuring range extends from very low to very high nitrate concentrations (approximately 0.05–20 mg/L as nitrate nitrogen or 0.2–100 mg/L as nitrate ion). The kit can perform approximately 60 measurements.
