Phosphate has several negative effects when present in excessive concentrations. First, it can cause unwanted algae growth, making an aquarium unsightly. Phosphate also blocks or delays the growth of corals and calcareous algae. A scientific study shows that a phosphate concentration of more than 0.05 mg/L reduces the growth of calcareous algae by 90%!
Rinsing fish food, which is a rich source of phosphate after thawing, through a sieve significantly reduces phosphate ingress. Avoiding phosphate-rich, low-quality activated carbon also helps keep phosphate levels as low as possible. It is therefore strongly recommended to test activated carbon for phosphates before use.
Elevated phosphate concentrations can be removed by using the liquid Phosphate Remover or the highly effective granular Phosphate Killer. Both also reduce silicate and organic content and adsorb toxic heavy metals.
Conclusion: Since phosphate can have serious consequences at concentrations above 0.05 mg/L, a test kit should be able to detect even lower concentrations.
The Salifert Phosphate Test detects 0.015 mg/L of phosphate within seconds. This makes the phosphate measurement extremely reliable and informative, allowing timely action to be taken. The kit can perform approximately 50 measurements.
