Mithraculus sculptus – Green spider crab for your saltwater aquarium

The green spider crab ( Mithraculus sculptus ), also known as the emerald crab, is a popular and beneficial inhabitant of saltwater aquariums. This crab is not only an attractive eye-catcher with its shimmering emerald-green shell, but also an effective algae eater. It actively contributes to algae control and is an easy-care crab species that is ideal for beginners.

Keeping conditions:

  • Aquarium size: From 60 liters, ideal for nano reef and larger saltwater aquariums
  • Water conditions: The green spider crab requires stable water parameters that are typical for saltwater aquariums:
    • Temperature: 24-27°C
    • Salinity: 1.023-1.025
    • pH value: 8.0-8.4
  • Diet: As an omnivore, Mithraculus sculptus prefers algae, especially filamentous and green algae. If necessary, its diet can be supplemented with special crab food or small amounts of protein, such as freeze-dried Mysis shrimp.
  • Social Behavior: This crab is peaceful and well-suited to community tanks. It generally gets along well with other inhabitants, but should not be kept with aggressive fish or other large crab species.
  • Hiding places: The Mithraculus sculptus loves caves and crevices where it can retreat. Live rock and coral structures provide the ideal habitat.

Special feature: The green spider crab is not only decorative, but also an excellent “cleaning crew” for the aquarium, as it effectively eats algae and thus contributes to the water quality.

The Mithraculus sculptus is an easy-care yet useful crab that brings joy to both beginners and advanced fishkeepers and ensures a balanced, clean saltwater aquarium.
